There are a handful of student collectives at UQ that are like clubs, except membership is free and automatic based on a shared marginalised identity (except for a couple of special ones!). If you’re a collective member, you can have as much or as little involvement with your collective(s) as you like – they’ll still be there for you. If you’re interested in getting involved with any of these collectives, search for them on social media, check out their page on the UQ Union website, or rock up to their physical space or one of their events. We promise we don’t bite! UQ Union staff open and close collective rooms, so they’ll be closed overnight and on weekends and public holidays. If a room is closed when it’s supposed to be open, ask the relevant collective representative or pop into Union Reception.
WOMEN’S COLLECTIVE
The UQU Women’s Collective (WoCo) is a group for women studying at UQ to connect, find support, and hang out in a quiet environment. With a focus on intersectional feminism, you’ll be welcome and respected here. There are Women’s Rooms on both St Lucia and Gatton campuses. The St Lucia Women’s Room is in the Union Complex, under the stairs below Main Course and just in front of the Redroom, to the right of the Queer Collective room. A sign on the door notes that all women (cis & trans) and non-binary people are welcome to use the space, and trans men are welcome as allies. The room has a small library, board games, free period products, a kitchenette, sofas and desks. It’s a cosy vibe! The Gatton Women’s Room is downstairs in Morrison Hall, next to the Rainbow Room.
QUEER COLLECTIVE
The UQU Queer Collective is a group for queer and/or LGBTQIA+ students at UQ to connect and build community. The Queer Collective has a room at both St Lucia and Gatton campuses. The St Lucia Queer Room is called Carden. It has both a quiet study space with desks and a social area with sofas, divided by a door. It has a food bank and a kitchenette, stim toys, books, and craft supplies. You can find it in the Union Complex at the bottom of the stairs opposite Boost and On a Roll, along the walkway in front of the Redroom, to the left of the Women’s Room. It’s a fun, social vibe on one side, and a respectful and studious vibe on the other. The Gatton Queer Room is called the Rainbow Room. It has desks and sofas, board games, and some craft supplies. You can find it on the ground floor of Morrison Hall, next to the Gatton Women’s Room. Both Carden and the Rainbow Room have vinyl stickers on the door and windows for privacy.
DISABILITY COLLECTIVE
The UQU Disability Collective (DisCo) is a group for UQ students who experience disability, neurodivergence, chronic illness, mental illness, and students who are blind and/or d/Deaf. The Disability Room is on the St Lucia campus and has several rooms for study, socialising, and resting. It has a full kitchenette and a bathroom with two toilet stalls, although it is not wheelchair accessible. The rest and recovery room has a bunk bed for students who need somewhere to rest on campus. The Disability Room has a small library, stim toys, and snacks and has a very chill atmosphere. It can be found on the lowest level of the Union Complex, up the stairs from UQ Lakes bus stop, and at the bottom of the stairs beside the Redroom.
INTERNATIONAL COLLECTIVE
The UQU International Collective (IntCo) is a group for international students at UQ to connect and find support. The International Collective Room is on the St Lucia campus. It is an open room with sofas and desks, a microwave, a fridge, and a kettle. It seems nice and cosy! The International Collective Room is in the Union Complex under the stairs below Main Course, next to the Women’s Room.
GOORIE BERRIMPA
Goorie Berrimpa is a group for Indigenous students at UQ to meet and build community. It has a room on the St Lucia campus called ATSIS (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit). It has a full kitchenette, desks, computers, and sofas. ATSIS is located on level 2 of Building 4, with an entrance between the School Locker and Campus Pharmacy.
There are also three other collectives, the Association of Postgraduate Students (APS), the Environment Collective and the Student Rights Collective, based on a shared pursuit or interest rather than a marginalised identity. These hold regular meetings and have representatives in the Union in the same way as other collectives! If these sound interesting to you, check them out on social media or the UQ Union’s website.
