The University of Queensland not only provides world-class facilities and internationally acclaimed academics – the UQ Union also provides incredible support to student collectives on campus!
These collectives are similar to Clubs and Societies – they host events, advertise volunteering opportunities and hold social gatherings. Collectives provide additional equity services through safe spaces on campus for various student interest groups, creates support networks and multitudes of opportunities for students to create a change. So far we have six established collectives, being:
UQU INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS COLLECTIVE
The UQU International Students Collective (UQU ISC) is open to all international students and anyone interested in cultural diversity. Through on-campus events, we aim to support and engage international students at UQ. We also advocate on behalf of international students to the university for better student experience and services.
UQU ENVIRONMENT COLLECTIVE
The UQU Environment Collective is a group of students on campus dedicated to making UQ cleaner, greener and more sustainable. In 2016 alone, members participated in Earth Hour Acoustic sessions, World Environment Day, Sustainability week and EcoSpeak events and forums with top environmental scientists. We have exciting plans to expand the UQU Food Co-op and Campus Community Gardens which already supply fresh, local and organic produce.
UQU GOORIE BERRIMPA COLLECTIVE
The UQU Goorie Berrimpa Collective is a group representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are studying at the University of Queensland. Hosting on-campus events, promoting external activities and supporting their student members, the UQU Goorie Berrimpa Collective aims to engage ATSI students with campus life and culture.
UQU ABILITIES COLLECTIVE
The UQU Abilities Collective is a peer support and advocacy group for students who identify as having a disability, chronic illness or mental health condition. We provide a safe space for rest and relaxation in the Abilities Room, hold events for our members and raise awareness around studying with a disability. Join us by adding our mascot ‘Missy Chameleon’ as a friend on Facebook.
UQU QUEER COLLECTIVE
The UQU Queer Collective is one of the longest running equity groups on campus, originally founded in 1973, and has been supported by UQU since 1993. The UQU Queer Collective provides support for queer students, offering a queer room, social events, awareness and advocacy campaigns for all queer students and staff, as well as allies.
UQU WOMEN’S COLLECTIVE
The UQU Women’s Collective is an autonomous group of women and gender diverse students at UQ. We’re a group of students passionate about feminism and gender equality. We run a range of events, from movie nights to professional networking events to feminist campaigns to support students in all respects while at UQ. We also have a women’s room in the Kingham Room in the UQ Union Complex across from the Red Room that is a safe space for women on campus.
UQU APS
The UQU Association of Postgraduate Students (APS) is an association comprising all +13,000 Postgraduate students at the University of Queensland brought to you by UQU, your student union. All postgraduate students are automatically members and are encouraged to get involved with UQU APS events across campus as soon as possible! We aim to create a platform for all postgraduate students to engage socially and professionally with students from other schools, faculties, nationalities, cultures and general interests.
